The Sussex Fund

Thank you to the growing number of alumni and friends who support the Sussex Fund every year...

What is the Sussex Fund?

Every year University alumni and friends generously support Sussex students by providing scholarships and hardship bursaries, and funding other activities that enhance their time at Sussex.

The Sussex Fund enables us to provide help and support to students who find themselves in unexpected financial difficulties, offer scholarships to attract the brightest minds worldwide, and support other activities to enrich the student experience on campus.

What does the Sussex Fund support?

The Greatest Needs Fund

This is by far the most popular fund among alumni as it enables the University to support the most pressing student needs and projects each year. This fund helps the University to balance the allocation of funds in the most beneficial way for students.

Hardship and Opportunities Fund

The University believes that no student should leave Sussex because he or she cannot afford to stay. This fund provides support for both undergraduates and postgraduates who find themselves in unforeseen financial difficulties through no fault of their own. A bursary is often the difference between a student having to abandon their studies or being able to complete and graduate.

Scholarships and Bursaries Fund

With our international reputation as a leading research institution, it is vital that Sussex offers scholarships to attract the best undergraduate and postgraduate students in an extremely competitive worldwide market. These scholarships can allow outstanding students from around the world to study at Sussex and help build our reputation as a world-leading university.

Student Experience and Learning Fund

This fund supports clubs, societies and student projects that enhance the quality of the student experience, as well as the purchase of books and equipment for students with special needs. One of the key projects the Sussex Fund supports is Sussex Plus. This new initiative will recognise the range of diverse extra-curricular activities undertaken by students, with supporting tuition and professional guidance, leading to an additional award upon graduation.

The Vice-Chancellor's Innovation Fund

This fund supports original departmental initiatives related to teaching and research. One such project is the Junior Research Associate bursaries. This scheme provides an opportunity for talented and ambitious undergraduates to participate in original research with faculty, staff and other members of the University community.

How is the money raised?

Our annual telephone fundraising campaign employs a group of current Sussex students in the spring and the autumn to call and speak to Sussex alumni. The calling is managed internally and the students enjoy the opportunity to talk with people about their experiences at Sussex and beyond.

We also raise awareness and support for the Sussex Fund through email and postal appeals to alumni.

How much money is raised each year?

Last year we raised over £160,000 in gifts and pledges.

How can I give tax efficiently?

Through Gift Aid, the University of Sussex can reclaim basic rate tax on all gifts if you have paid an amount of UK Income Tax equal to the tax we reclaim. If you pay tax at the higher rate, then you can claim further tax relief on your Tax Return. Just tick the box on the donations form, or ask us about Gift Aid.

Will my gift be acknowledged?

All supporters will be thanked in our Roll of Donors, unless we are instructed otherwise.
