London Bombs

Who are we ?

We are researchers from the universities of Sussex, Nottingham and St. Andrews. We are doing work funded by the Economic and Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC) on behaviour during emergencies.

Our aim is to produce a better understanding of such behaviour and thereby improve public safety in the event of any future such emergency.

If you need help or need to talk to someone:

Call the July 7th Assistance Centre, 0845 054 7444
(Open 10am-8pm every day for anyone affected by the bombings)

Tell us about your experiences ......

Please email us at the following address: c.p.cocking@sussex.ac.uk

Providing the following information:

1. Please give us as full an account as you can of the events as you experienced them. Tell us what happened, how you felt, how you behaved, how others behaved.

2. Please give us the following information:
- Tell us about yourself: your age, sex, occupation and any other relevant information.
- Tell us where you were, where you were going and the purpose of your journey.
- Tell us how much you knew about what was going on, who gave you information, and how useful and credible it was.
- Tell us if you were travelling with anyone else, and your relationship to your companions.

3. Please give us the following details about the events:
- Tell us if you were scared, how scared you felt.
- Tell us how much danger you felt you were in.
- Tell us if others were present and what sort of crowd it was.
- Tell us whether you felt any sort of bond or any sort of unity with others who were there
- Tell us about the reactions of others: from what you could tell how did they feel and how did they behave
- Tell us if you saw any examples of people helping others or else simply looking out for themselves and ignoring others.
- Tell us if you saw any examples of cowardice or heroism.
- Tell us if your feelings or perceptions towards other people around you changed over the course of the event. If so in what way.

4. From what you experienced, please tell us how effective you think the following groups were in their response to the bombings, and how effective (or not) this made the evacuation. Please also mention if you think there is anything they could have done differently.
-
You and your fellow passengers
- London Underground Staff
- The Fire Brigade
- Paramedics and Ambulance crews
- The Police

In all cases the more details you can give us the more helpful it would be.

If you have any other information, any notes you took, any diaries you kept, any e-mails or letters sent to others, any photos or video footage, we would find that particularly useful. Of course any material would be returned and any information you provide us will be treated in the strictest confidence. Any material used in our subsequent research will be rendered completely anonymous.

If you are interested in being interviewed or being sent a further questionnaire about your experiences, can you please include your contact details: name, phone number and address.

Feel free to ask us any questions about our work.
