Julius Sondheimer

Both Julius Sondheimer’s sons fought for the German army during World War I and both were awarded an Iron Cross. One of them, Max Sondheimer, survived the war and was able to emigrate to the UK in 1939. He took with him a photoalbum and a small pocket diary which he kept during his time on the Western Front. Many Jews hoped that their effort in the war would prove their commitment and patriotism as Germans, counteracting antisemitic prejudice.
