Frequently asked questions.
Questions about my offer
I have received an offer from the University of Sussex asking me to 'Please send verification of qualifications to institution', what does this mean?
I am having difficulty locating my certificates, what should I do?
It's important to provide verification of your qualifications, in some cases we may ask you to contact the exam board for a replacement which can take up to 4 weeks. If you are having problems locating your certificates you must contact the Admissions Office immediately on +44 (0)1273 678416 so we can advise you on what to do next.
Making Changes to my application
I have already submitted my application through UCAS but have decided I want to change my course, what can I do?
Please email ug.applicants@sussex.ac.uk with your full name and UCAS PID number and the course that you would like to change to. You will also need to write a new personal statement stating why you want to change to the new course. We will always review your application for another course depending on qualifications and availability.
I am due to start this September, but have now decided I would like to defer my place, what do I do?
We will consider requests to defer entry, but it is not always possible to allow changes in the latter stages of the admissions cycle and we will consider requests on a case-by-case basis. If you wish to defer, please email ug.applicants@sussex.ac.uk with your full name and UCAS PID number and we will consider the request. Please be aware that once you have deferred your place you may be unable to revert back to your original year of entry. Also please be advised only one deferral is allowed.
I am holding a deferred offer for next year’s entry, but now want to come this year. Is this possible?
You need to contact us to discuss this. Unfortunately this is not straightforward and will depend entirely on whether we have space in your subject. You need to put your request in writing and we will look into it and get back to you as soon as possible. The easiest way to contact us is via email at ug.applicants@sussex.ac.uk
I no longer want to go to University, who do I tell?
It's important to contact UCAS who will inform your chosen universities that you do not wish to proceed with your application to University.
What happens in Admissions over the summer
Do I need to send Sussex my examination results?
If you hold a conditional offer based on A or AS-levels, BTEC, Scottish Highers or the International Baccalaureate Diploma then the University will normally be sent your results by the exam boards (via UCAS), so you will not need to notify us of your results.
However, if your offer is conditional upon any other qualification then you must either send a copy of your official results to the University or arrange for your school or college to do so. We will be writing to you to request these, but please make sure any results are sent to the Admissions office, or scan and email them to results@sussex.ac.uk as soon as they are published. If you have any questions, just give us a call on +44 (0)1273 678416.On A-level publication day, what do I do?
On A-level publication day you should first check UCAS Track to see if you have gained a place at the University. If the conditions of your offer have been met your place will be confirmed immediately and you will have gained a place at Sussex. You will be sent information regarding registration and start dates in late August.
We will review all applications where students have missed the conditions of their offer and in some cases it may still be possible to confirm your place. This obviously depends on the number of students who have met their conditions and, therefore, on how many places we have remaining. Unfortunately, every year there are some subjects where we cannot take any students who miss their conditions. We will, however, review each case and, if you are in the position of missing your required grades, you should check UCAS Track to find out your status. If there is still no decision on UCAS Track then please telephone Admissions on +44 (0)1273 678416 and we will let you know what is happening. We do review all cases and would like to be able to take students, who have made a commitment to Sussex, but who have narrowly missed their conditions; however this is unfortunately not always possible. Is there a deadline for submitting my results?
Yes, we need results by 31st August otherwise you may lose your place. If there is likely to be a delay beyond this then you must contact Undergraduate Admissions on +44 (0)1273 678416 to discuss this.
What if I had difficulties with my examinations?
If you have had serious difficulties which you think may have affected your studies or examinations, such as prolonged illness or close family bereavement, we will take this into account when considering your results. You must tell us before your results are published, so please write to us by the start of August with any information. We recommend a letter from your school/college explaining the situation and, if you have had medical difficulties, you may want to send a doctor’s note. Please send any information to the Undergraduate Admissions office either by e-mail at ug.applicants@sussex.ac.uk or by post to University of Sussex, UG Admissions office, Sussex House, Brighton, BN1 9RH, United Kingdom.
If I do miss the conditions of my offer, how long will I have to wait for a decision?
We always aim to make decisions as quickly as possible. If you have taken A levels, we would hope to have a decision available for you on A level publication day. Therefore, if you miss your results, the first place you should check is UCAS Track as we will hopefully have already made a decision. If we have not been able to make a decision, please telephone Admissions on (01273) 678416 (or +44 1273 678416 from outside the UK) and we will be able to let you know what is happening.
We always aim to keep the number of applicants without a decision to an absolute minimum and will move to make final decisions as soon as possible. This will normally mean the decision is provided either on the Thursday of A level publication or on the Friday. There will always be some applications where is it necessary to hold a decision longer (especially if we are missing a result or where we are waiting to see if space is available), but if you contact Admissions we will let you know what is happening and can discuss options. The phone lines will be busy, but we increase our capacities considerably, so please keep trying if you have difficulties getting through.
If you have other (non-A level qualifications) then we will aim to process the decision as soon as the results are known, which is generally earlier than A levels. There may be some cases where (for reasons of fairness and parity) we have to hold a decision until A level results are published in mid-August, but we will let you know if this is the case. Again, if you have any questions, please call the Admissions Office. If you are in any doubt about whether you need to send us your results, please see the question above.
What do I do if I didn't take my declared examinations?
If, for whatever reason, you did not take examinations in subjects you declared on your UCAS application form, and which form part of the conditions of your offer, please can you contact us at ug.applicants@sussex.ac.uk to let us know immediately. It is important that we know by the start of August any A or AS-levels (or other qualifications) that you dropped so that we do not chase you, your school or the Examination Boards for these results later in the summer. If we do not know that you have dropped a subject it may delay the processing of your application in August.
What is clearing?
Clearing is a service that enables you to try and find a place at a University if you do not currently have one. Please see UCAS for more information regards this.
If we do have any clearing vacancies available they will be published in August.
Coming to Sussex
I am no longer able to come to Sussex, do I need to tell you?
Yes. Please let us know in writing and we will be able to advise you on how to proceed. It is really important that you get in touch and keep us informed of your situation. If you don’t tell us you may be depriving another student of a place at Sussex. Please email us at ug.applicants@sussex.ac.uk
Can I Change Course when I arrive?
It is not advisable to wait until you arrive to change your course. If you are thinking about changing course you should contact us at ug.applicants@sussex.ac.uk to discuss the possibility before your results are published. The University has very strict quotas on the number of places in different subject areas, so it is advisable to contact us as soon as possible.

Do I need to send in copies of my certificates in order to register?
Normally we will have verified your results as part of the confirmation process, but occasionally we will write to applicants requesting that they send in copies of existing qualifications which have been declared on the UCAS application. We will need to see these before you can complete the on-line registration process, so if you receive an email from us asking you to provide copies of earlier results then please send these to the Admissions Office at results@sussex.ac.uk as soon as possible and no later than the 31stAugust. Applicants who do not provide verification of requested qualifications will not be able register at the University of Sussex and risk having their place withdrawn.
