Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts

Development approach

The project brief consists of bringing back to life an iconic building for the University of Sussex, and forging a distinctive identity based on practice-based research.

Regular use of the Gardner Arts Centre, designed by architect Sir Basil Spence and listed Grade II* by English Heritage, ended several years ago and it is in a state of disrepair. Typically for a 1969 construction that has not been upgraded, this disrepair is coupled with a lack of disabled access and a lack of contemporary infrastructure.

Sean Kenny's visionary design of the auditorium, a unique feature on Sussex's stunning Spence campus and more generally in the history of stage architecture, is being revisited by the project team together with English Heritage and theatre architects to make its legacy an exciting focus for 21st century creative energies.

The project is progressing in two strands:

Strand 1 – External Repairs

Contractors have completed most of the external work, making repairs to the windows and roof, and repointing the brickwork.

Strand 2 – Major Refurbishment Contract (completion summer 2014)

The design team is currently working towards the final design for the interior of the building to deliver the brief in the most cost effective manner.
