Benefits of the Student Rep Scheme
Student reps are democratically elected to represent their peers. They enable a useful and effective communication link between staff and students. They provide helpful feedback to staff on courses and programmes; raise concerns in a constructive manner; give feedback to other students on why particular decisions are made; and can help to pre-empt concerns becoming serious issues.
Elected student reps are trained and supported by members of both the University and the Students' Union known as the student rep support team.
Publicity
To get the best student reps the scheme needs publicity in lectures. You can help in the following ways:
Lectures / Powerpoint presentation
By spending 5-10 minutes talking about the scheme and the elections during the introductory lectures. In particular it would be helpful if you could explain a bit about why the student rep scheme is useful to your department and/or School and why you value the input of student opinions. A powerpoint presentation has been produced which you can use as a basis for talking about the scheme and the elections. Some current student reps may also ask if they can talk about the scheme at the beginning of a lecture and it would help if you could both encourage and allow this. Students who nominate themselves may also ask if they can talk to their cohort about why they are standing and why they would like to be voted for. Again, it would greatly benefit the scheme if this could be encouraged and allowed.
Powerpoint for nominees
The above presentation provides information for student rep nominees on how to campaign during the elections.
Posters
Posters with information on how students can nominate themselves will be put up by the Students' Union. New posters will be put up at the start of Week 3 (19th Oct) to let students know that voting is open. If for some reason posters have not gone up in your department or if you would like additional posters please contact the student rep support team who will be able to supply you with more.
More Information
More information for students can be found at www.studentreps.co.uk
Training
Training for all newly elected student reps will be run by the Students' Union in Week 5. Student reps will be contacted with further details, once elected.
