The School of Global Studies at Sussex aims to provide one the UK's premier venues for understanding how the world is changing. Drawing together the Departments of Anthropology, Geography and International Relations, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in international development, the School offers a broad range of perspectives on global issues such as climate change, international migration, conflict and violence, international security, and global cultures and religions. Staff and students in the School are actively engaged with a wide range of international and local partners, and seek to contribute a distinctive perspective to global affairs.
The School's teaching is focused on five major undergraduate programmes (BA Anthropology, BA/BSc Geography, BA International Relations and BA Development Studies) as well as a range of more specialist postgraduate programmes. With an intake of around 400 undergraduate and postgraduate students each year, the School is large enough to offer a diverse and exciting learning environment, whilst maintaining a close and supportive atmosphere. Our aim is that Global Studies students will graduate with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in an increasingly global labour market, whether in business, government, or the not-for-profit sector.
In terms of research, each of the School's Departments performed in the top 15 nationally in the UK's 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, with Anthropology and International Relations both ranked 7th, and Geography ranked 13th in their respective units of assessment. With a high proportion of our work ranked as 'world-leading' and 'internationally excellent', we provide an excellent environment for doctoral and post-doctoral research in both applied and theoretical fields.
