All of our lecturers are active researchers and their research interests are drawn on in our teaching which greatly benefits students' learning.

Teaching in the Department of Sociology

In the last independent national Teaching Quality Assessment the Department of Sociology was given the maximum possible rating, 24 out of 24, a level achieved by only three other Sociology departments in the country. We are regularly ranked by newspapers such as The Times and The Guardian in the top Sociology departments in the country for teaching.

Research in the Department of Sociology

Sociology at Sussex was ranked 16th in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). 80 per cent of our research was rated as recognised internationally or higher and over a quarter rated as world leading. In addition, we were the second best performing 'smaller' department in the country.

The Department is home to researchers working across a variety of cutting edge themes. Our research is developed within three areas: social theory and political sociology; health, medicine and science; and gender and inequality. We draw on our long-standing tradition in both social and political theory and rigorous empirical research in the UK, Europe and North America. We have a world class reputation for research on inequality, regulation and identity. The Department offers a vibrant and productive environment in which to conduct and present research.

In addition to the academic value of our research, our work has fed into a number of public and policy debates. Members of the Department have presented to, and advised, Parliamentary select committees, written briefings for policymakers and have worked on projects commissioned by a number of agencies.
