Media and Film

Media and Film at Sussex is one of the leading departments in the UK in the field of media theory, practice and research. We have a firmly established reputation in both teaching and research, built on our distinctive interdisciplinary approach. Our Department is ranked among the top 10 places for media and film in the UK (The Independent's Complete University Guide 2008).

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) we were ranked joint 8th for our research. 100 per cent of our research activity in media and film was rated as recognised internationally or higher, and 75 per cent rated as internationally excellent or higher.

In our engagements with the media we explore, interrogate and bring together theoretical, critical and methodological traditions drawn from the humanities, social sciences and creative practices.

Teaching in the Department of Media and Film

In the 2008 National Student Survey our enthusiastic staff and intellectually stimulating degree programmes were praised. Our students are taught by internationally respected active researcher engaged in contemporary debates.

The aim of our degree programmes is to enable students to develop a rigorous critical understanding of how the media in all their forms - as technologies, institutions, practices and texts - figure in modern life. Our students develop their skills in media research and analysis, critical reading and conceptual thought, independent and collaborative work, and writing and presenting work in a range of styles and media. Students can also develop practical skills in audio/visual media, digital imaging, photography and other media. We also offer practice-led programmes at Masters and doctoral level. Our brand new production facilities are state-of-the-art and we have a dedicated media and film library. We also have links with many Brighton-based, national and international creative and media organisations.

Our degrees are not vocational, but they do equip students with skills relevant to future careers. The Department scored 10/10 for job prospects after graduation in the 2007 Guardian University Guide.

Research in The Department of Media and Film

We have particular research strengths in the areas of narrative and popular culture, and gender and sexuality. Our internationally respected research explores questions around the materiality and politics of cultural forms and formations. Researchers work on, across and through a range of media: film, television, radio, photography, and 'new' and interactive forms, and specialise within three interlocking themes; media, technology, form and experience, cultural histories/cultural politics, and the politics of representation. The Department is also home to the Sussex Centre for Cultural Studies and the innovative Centre for Material Digital Culture.
