The Department has regional expertise on Europe and North America, the Middle East, East Asia, South Asia and Latin America.

Teaching in the Department of International Relations

Sussex is one of only a handful of UK universities that offers a long-established BA in International Relations. We also offer five MA programmes centred on international relations, conflict and security, and global political economy. Our programmes are distinctive in that they cover both mainstream and radical approaches to the subject. Our core courses are designed to give students a wide intellectual foundation - combining perspectives from history, social theory and political economy - on which to build an understanding of world politics today. Our faculty are leading researchers at the cutting edge of the discipline.

Research in the Department of International Relations

In the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) the Department of International Relations results were excellent, placing us amongst the top three dedicated international relations departments in the UK. 95 per cent of our research was rated as recognised internationally or higher.

International relations research at Sussex has a long standing international reputation, reflecting the critical and diverse perspectives of its research staff and students. We are committed to critical and interdisciplinary perspectives, encouraging intellectual interaction with other research groups within the University and beyond.

Our key research work is clustered around three areas: war, violence and security; global political economy; and critical and historical international relations theory. At the same time, we are developing new and innovative work on globalisation, global civil society and social change, global environmental change and other emerging issues in the field.

The Department is home to the Centre for Global Political Economy, one of the few dedicated international political economy research centres in the world. Staff also participate in the Justice and Violence Research Centre.
