History

Since the establishment of Sussex the Deparment of History has played a leading role within the University, because of the range of its teaching and the interdisciplinary nature of its courses. In addition to the BA degree in History and a range of joint BAs, we also offer MA degrees in History, Contemporary History, Intellectual History and the History of Political Thought, Early Modern History and Local and Regional History.

Teaching in the Department of History

History students at Sussex are an eclectic mix of school leavers, mature students and visiting students from overseas. Some of our students take the single honours degree, others choose to study for a joint degree. This combination of backgrounds, experience and academic interests, when added to the interdisciplinary nature of the University, helps to make history at Sussex distinctive and exciting.

Research in the Department of History

History was rated 15th in the UK for research in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). 90 per cent of our research was rated as recognised internationally or higher, and a quarter as world leading.

The Department has an international reputation for research in Early Modern, Intellectual and Contemporary History. Members of the Department have established international profiles in the history of everyday life, poverty and social exclusion, gender and the family, race relations, environmental history, business and international history, and the history of political thought and political culture.

The History Department runs a weekly work-in-progress seminar throughout the academic year, to which visiting speakers, research students and faculty contribute. It has become nationally known for promoting historical innovation and conceptual discussion. Members of faculty also run a fortnightly Life History Research Seminar in close collaboration with events initiated by the Mass-Observation Archive.
