Teaching in the Department of Economics
Our economists work closely with the major national and international economic institutions, from the World Bank to the European Commission as well the Department for International Development and this depth of experience is brought to the teaching of our degree programmes. We emphasise the practical application of economics to the analysis of contemporary social and economic problems.
In the 2008 National Student Survey the Department of Economics was ranked equal 3rd of 50 departments in Britain on overall student satisfaction.

Research in the Department of Economics
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 100 per cent of our economics research was rated as rcognised internationally or higher, and 60 per cent rated as internationally excellent or higher.
Economics research at Sussex is strongly linked to the needs of policy-making bodies, such as the European Commission, the World Bank, WTO, DFID, UNDP and UNICEF as well as the international academic community. We concentrate on three heavily overlapping clusters of work: international trade, development economics and labour economics. The main areas of research strength in the Department are: globalisation and trade policy, indeed we are one of Europe's leading centres for research on issues of international trade; development: poverty, inequality and rural development; labour: especially wage distributions and education in emerging economies and developing countries.
