Interact Lab is looking for a Designer on a FTC for 3 yrs, PT 0.6 FTE. The Interact Lab is internationally renowned for it research in creating novel interactive devices for enabling new forms of human-computer interaction (HCI). HCI is about applying human abilities to the design of tools, systems, and environments that are safe, effective and comfortable for use.
The group comprises postdoctoral fellows and PhD students from various backgrounds in computer science, and Engineering. The group is dedicated to pursuing highly ambitious frontier research that involves creating electro-mechanical prototypes and iterations.
Purpose of the post - The provision of design assistance and advice to research project staff and students to facilitate the investigation and output of the Interact research group that is led by Prof. Subramanian. This position is established within the School of Engineering and Informatics and funded by the European Research Council (ERC) & EPSRC.
The Interact lab uses various virtual mediums to communicate its research results. This includes creating videos for YouTube, maintaining appropriate social-media presence and an upto date website. The group also regularly showcases its research through interactive public installations that allow users to get hands-on experience with our research prototypes.
The designer is responsible for collecting appropriate images, video-snippets and diagrams from lab members to assemble content that is appropriate for the virtual mediums and work with lab members to manage operational logistics so that hands-on experiences run smoothly and showcase the lab and the research prototype in the best possible light.
The designer will need to
a) provide video-editing and software support for the Interact Lab.
b) be responsible for the smooth, safe & efficient running of lab website, social-media pages,
c) assemble videos of projects (from snippets provided by lab members) and
d) support lab members in creating simple interactive games around research prototypes.
You should have a degree or equivalent work experience in computer science and media studies with a high appreciation for building artefacts and explore new technical trends in how people use and interact with devices and interactive systems.
