Description
Applications are invited for a lab technician position to support work on an exciting BBSRC-funded project investigating fundamental structure-function relationships in central synapses. Duties of the post will include assisting with electrophysiology, fluorescence imaging and electron microscopy experiments, brain slice tissue preparation, basic molecular biology and the preparation of fixed tissue for ultrastructural work. In addition, the post holder will play a significant role in the day-to-day running of the laboratory, data-handling, ordering and stock-keeping, and helping to ensure health and safety policies are implemented. There may be opportunities to contribute to primary data-gathering. Specifically, the project will investigate how organizational principles of synaptic vesicle pools contribute to setting and modulating synaptic function, building on our recent work (Neuron, 2010 66:37-44; Nat Comms, 2011;2:531; Neuron, 2012; 76:579-589). The research will involve major collaborations with groups in the UK (at UCL and LMB-Cambridge), the US and Israel. Experience of neuroscience research in mammalian brain will be a significant advantage.
Neuroscience is a major research focus at the University of Sussex. The successful candidate will be embedded in a highly-interactive and world-class research environment with leading experts in fields including synaptic transmission, sensory transduction, neural circuits, disease-related nervous dysfunction and neuronal plasticity.
