The University has just launched its first major refurbishment fundraising campaign, with the vision of making Sussex truly outstanding. Philanthropic support will make the difference between continued progress and complete transformation.
The Vice-Chancellor launched the campaign at the 50th anniversary celebration weekend, and was pleased to announce that we have already raised 50 per cent of our £50-million goal, a sum that resonates with the 50 years of the University’s history.
We want to achieve a margin of excellence in three key strands of activity:
The interior of the Attenborough Centre, currently undergoing an extensive refurbishment
- Our people – because Sussex is our staff and students. We want to establish an enhanced scholarships programme to attract outstanding students from around the world.
- Our programmes – because our work can transform the world. We must attract worldleading academics in areas where our research can make a significant impact in society.
- Our places – because it is vital that we invest in our future. We will invest in an improved campus infrastructure that will take us into the next 50 years and beyond, while preserving our iconic architectural heritage.
We will be fundraising for individual projects within the campaign, including:
- Scholarships and bursaries – Giving outstanding students the opportunity to excel, regardless of their background or resources. These awards support and reinforce the Sussex values of freedom of thought and enterprise, and help to nurture the next generation of big thinkers who will go on to make a positive difference in the world.
- Translational cancer research – Working towards creating a new generation of drugs to treat cancers in non-toxic ways and to start tackling cancers we can’t yet treat.
- African climate change initiative – Creating experts in the complex issues of climate change mitigation adaptation.
- Neuronal dysfunction and degeneration – Understanding the processes that damage the cells of the nervous system to help us find new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.
- Newton project – Shedding new light on the science pioneered by Sir Isaac Newton.
- Centre for the study of corruption – Leading the fight against corruption and its hugely damaging impact on the public and commercial sectors around the globe.
- Biomedical sciences building – An inspiring new building for Sussex’s worldleading research community to explore the frontiers of biomedicine.
- The Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts – Formerly the Gardner Centre, the Attenborough Centre will re-open as a creative hub and symbol of Sussex creativity and intellectual agility.
