Applications are invited for a Research Fellow in Quantum Devices Engineering in the Ion Quantum Technology Group in Sussex Centre for Quantum Technologies at the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Sussex. The position is part of the UK National Quantum Technologies programme.
Translating state-of-the-art laboratory based technology into deployable practical devices is the core mission of the UK Quantum Technology Hub for Sensors and Metrology. As part of this hub the successful candidate will help develop a portable trapped-ion magnetometer and microwave atomic clock at Sussex which capitalises on the unique capabilities of trapped ions. Specifically, the trapped-ion magnetometer we develop features a range of capabilities including the sensing of magnetic fields in the DC-MHz and in the GHz range with sensitivities on the order of pT/Hz1/2 as well as the ability to detect magnetic field gradients. Potential applications of such a versatile magnetometer are far reaching and can be found in areas such as the security and military sector as well as the medical and geology sector. The project involves performing experiments using a laboratory based experimental setup as well as further developing a deployable quantum sensor and atomic clock ready for commercialisation.
The successful applicant should have a PhD in a field relevant to the work to be carried out as part of this role along with a good publication record. Previous ion trapping experience would be desirable but is not essential. Some of the typical tasks for this position include performing quantum sensing experiments and related atomic system simulations, constructing and characterising a prototype device and miniaturizing core subcomponents or where possible liaising with industry on outsourcing such development. In addition, tasks include the operation of microfabricated ion traps, high power microwave setups, laser systems, optical setups and the development of relevant electronics and ultra-high vacuum systems. The successful candidate is expected to actively engage in our research program, provide guidance to undergraduate and postgraduate students and to participate in the strategic planning of the group. The salary offered will be appropriate to the qualifications, standing and experience of the successful candidate.
