Job description

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has awarded £5.75 million to the Department of Global Health and Infection at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) to establish a Global Health Research Unit at BSMS, working closely with partners in Ethiopia and Sudan.

The grant includes support for seven major projects across three neglected tropical diseases: podoconiosis, mycetoma and scabies.  The projects range from geographical mapping and developing new diagnostic tools through to experimental laboratory work and implementation of treatment packages.

We are looking for an experienced post-doctoral research scientist to help us unravel the immunological basis of podoconiosis, a form of leg swelling often seen in barefoot farmers.  This progressive and disabling condition is caused by irritant volcanic soil particles that trigger inflammation in genetically-predisposed individuals.

The successful applicant will:

  • Have a PhD or equivalent experience in immunology
  • Have proven expertise in a wide range of immunological techniques
  • Have the ability to work as part of a inter-disciplinary international team and be willing to undertake part of the research in Ethiopia
