Applications are invited for a Research Assistant position funded by the Sussex Sustainability Research Programme (SSRP), a collaborative initiative by the University of Sussex and Institute of Development Studies, on a project titled “Understanding trade-offs between sustainable development goals in urbanising contexts”. The long-term goal of the project is to develop a novel transdisciplinary methodology for mapping and analysing how peri-urban environmental change results in the creation of risk and opportunities for human health and wellbeing, and how they unfold across time, space, and social groups.
The successful candidate will work within a multi-disciplinary team led by Professor Fiona Marshall (Business, Management and Economics) and Dr Novi Quadrianto (Engineering and Informatics). You will be based in the Predictive Analytics Lab (PAL) at the Department of Informatics but will interact continuously with the whole team across the different Schools. In addition to undertaking high quality research and publishing in top machine learning conferences/journals including NIPS, ICML, JMLR, and TPAMI, the PAL group also creates significant impact by providing support, technology, and highly-trained specialists to a new generation of technology companies/charity foundations.
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, statistics, physics, mathematics (or related disciplines) and research experience in machine learning. Experience with deep convolutional neural network models and a data visualization tool such as D3 or Gephi is a distinct advantage. Informal enquiries are welcome and can be made to Fiona Marshall, Professor of Environment & Development (F.Marshall@sussex.ac.uk), or Novi Quadrianto, Senior Lecturer in Machine Learning (N.Quadrianto@sussex.ac.uk).
