Job description

The University of Sussex is looking to recruit a full-time Lecturer to join the Department of Social Work and Social Care, within the School of Education and Social Work (ESW). The Department of Social Work and Social Care has made and will be continuing to make a number of academic appointments during the 2017-18 academic year.

These appointments are taking place at an exciting time in the development of the Department as it expands both its delivery of undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in social work, childhood and youth studies, wellbeing across the life course and health, wellbeing and social care and its research activities in related fields. The exact designation of the post, e.g. Lecturer in Social Work/Childhood and Youth/Wellbeing, will be decided on appointment, dependent on the expertise of the successful applicant.

The Department of Social Work and Social Care is ranked in the Guardian League Table 2018 as the 5th best provider of under-graduate qualifying social work programmes. In addition to an under-graduate programme we deliver a post-graduate qualifying social work programme and from April 2018 will be delivering, in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council and East Sussex County Council, Step Up to Social Work. This is a fast track post-graduate professional qualifying programme.

The Department is a founder member of the newly established South Coast Regional Centre for Social Work Education, which is responsible for the new teaching partnership delivery model for post-graduate qualifying programmes. Alongside the social work programmes the Department contributes to teaching on a BA in Childhood and Youth Studies and delivers an MA in Childhood and Youth Studies, an MRes in Wellbeing and an expanding suite of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) modules. From September 2018 it will also be delivering a BA programme in Health, Wellbeing and Social Care.

Research in the Department is organized around three research centres - the Centre for Innovation and Research in Childhood and Youth (CIRCY), the Centre for Innovation and Research in Wellbeing (CIRW) and the Centre for Innovation and Research in Social Work  (CSWIR). Complementing and complemented by the Department’s teaching programmes, the research centres offer stimulating spaces for colleagues from within the Department, School and University and beyond to collaborate on wide-ranging, innovative research projects.

The successful applicant for the post will:

  • develop and deliver teaching across the portfolio of programmes delivered in the Department of Social Work and Social Care, with further opportunities to contribute to teaching across the whole School.
  • contribute to high quality research that makes a significant contribution to one of more of the following research centres: CIRCY, CSWIR, or CIRW.
  • undertake key service roles within the Department or more broadly across the School.

Successful applicants will need to show a clear ability to:

  • take initiatives and work independently within the context of the Department and School’s teaching commitments
  • deliver high quality teaching to undergraduate, post-graduate and CPD students
  • take initiatives to ensure high levels of student satisfaction
  • independently, and in collaboration with colleagues, undertake high quality research
  • undertake a range of teaching, research, and service related tasks
