Permanent, full time

The University of Sussex is a dynamic institution with a strong international reputation in education and research. The 200 acre campus is based on the edge of the South Downs National Park, just a few minutes from the city of Brighton and Hove, providing an excellent working environment in a remarkable setting.
Creative thinking, intellectual challenge and collaborative working are fundamental to a Sussex education and that is reflected in the University’s work place. This is an exciting opportunity to make a difference to the institution as it embarks upon a new, long-term strategy.
The University is, for the first time, establishing an in-house capability to provide legal advice across the whole range of the institution’s activity. We are seeking to appoint an experienced legal professional to provide advice and counsel to the University’s Executive Group. This is a key strategic appointment and you will report to the Chief Operating Officer and work closely with the Vice-Chancellor.
As would be expected of a research intensive university with a turnover of just under £300 million, a student population of nearly 18,000 and 2,600 staff, there are many and wide ranging legal requirements. The post-holder will demonstrate an understanding of the various stakeholders and interests that need to be represented, protected and advanced to ensure the University remains competitive.
Key responsibilities will include:
Undertaking a comprehensive review of the University’s legal services, with a view to building an in-house capability to provide advice across the whole range of its activities. Providing leadership for all the University’s legal activities, including contractual arrangements, the management of legal risk, litigation and management of our external legal advisers. Working with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders on complex legal matters connected to projects, such as the construction of a new £145 million academic building and new online distance learning programmes.
The University is seeking a legally qualified solicitor or barrister who has the experience, gravitas, influencing skills and relationship building capabilities to undertake this demanding role. We are excited by the University’s future and potential within this post for making a significant impact on our business. If you are, too, we would very much like to hear from you.
If you would like to receive a Candidate Pack, discuss the role in further detail or wish to arrange a confidential discussion with a University of Sussex representative, please contact Laurence Wolahan, Hays Executive 07764 902 591 07985 443 826
