The Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) is a department within the University of Sussex Business School. The School and SPRU are seeking to appoint a full time Communications and Engagement Officer, for 10 months, to continue the communications and engagement activities of the ESRC funded Nexus Network in its final extension year, and to work on updating and developing SPRU department communications.
The Nexus Network aims to foster debate, innovative research and practical collaborations across the linked ‘nexus’ domains of food, energy, water and the environment.
Through 2018, The Nexus Network will continue to act as a convening space for researchers from all disciplines, and decision makers in government, business and civil society, maintaining network connections and offering scope for further creation and aggregation of academic and policy content.
SPRU is internationally recognised as a leading centre of interdisciplinary research on science, technology and innovation policy. Over the last few years, culminating in the SPRU 50th Anniversary last year, SPRU developed its communications functions and platforms considerably, and they continue to require further updating, maintenance and development.
The Communications and Engagement Officer will manage updates and developments to the SPRU website, other online platforms, and the print brochure, and will act as a key contact for school alumni relations, marketing and school communications professional services colleagues.
The role will involve organising flagship SPRU events, leading on local and public engagement initiatives, and the promotion of the new SPRU executive training programme.
Working closely with the Nexus Network Coordinator, the Communications and Engagement Officer will maintain and update the Nexus Network website and social media platforms and produce regular email newsletters.
They will establish monitoring procedures to track relevant information and outputs (including academic papers and citations) from Nexus Network academics and legacy work from Nexus Network projects. The role will also involve managing the transition to a static site and accessible archive from October 2018.
The successful candidate will have excellent written and oral communication skills, with an understanding of research in a Higher Education setting, knowledge and interest in science policy and the Water-Energy-Food Nexus, and an ability to translate academic content for wider audiences.
You should have experience of organising events, maintaining and updating websites, communicating using social media platforms and producing e-newsletters and blogs.
You must be able to communicate confidently and effectively with a wide range of people, and to work to deadlines in a calm and professional manner. You will be flexible, able to prioritise work systematically and an enthusiastic and supportive team player.
