I am a member of the Linguistics and English Language department at the University of Sussex. I teach mostly research students, but I also offer a course in the first year of the BA English Language degree called The Making of English (soon available on web-site). My special interests are in language-change, historical sociology of language (including dialect and vernacular culture), dialectology and principally onomastics (name-study). I also have a recurrent interest in phonology (including intonation) and morphology, and in local history, (agri)cultural history, geomorphology and ecology as contributors with philology to interdisciplinary place-name study.
