As of Oct 2009, I am a visiting researcher in the Department of Informatics at Sussex University UK and a full professor at the Vienna University of Technology, Institute of Design and Assessment of Technology. Previously I was a Senior Lecturer and director of the Interact Lab at Sussex. Interact is part of the Human Centred Technology (HCT) Group with the IDEAS lab. Prior to joining Sussex , I worked as a Snr Manager of User Experience at Sapient in London and as a Snr Research Fellow at the Distributed Systems Technology Centre (DSTC) and Centre for Online Health in Australia . I also have a clinical background .

I have taught human computer interaction and integrated studies (an advanced topic course in new and emerging technologies) and currently teaching Cognitive Ergonomics. These are all part of the Human Centred Computing Systems (HCCS) Masters program. I also teach Advanced Technical Communications to Masters and DPhil students. I supervise nine DPhil students and five Masters students, undertaking a diverse range of projects at various intersections of interactive design, people, and technology.

My research is concerned with theoretical, methodological and technical approaches to supporting social interaction and collaboration. Current projects include: Platform Grant, eScience Usability, Motivating Mobility, PREP electronic health records, and Supporting shy users in pervasive computing. (see current projects).

Broad topic areas that I look at from a social informatics perspective include: Pervasive computing; Computer supported cooperative work (CSCW); User centred design (UCD); Human computer interaction (HCI); and Health informatics and telehealth. I am particularly interested in emerging pervasive applications and how these should be designed and deployed to fit in with everyday contexts of work, play and daily life. Support for older people living at home is one focus here, both from a healthcare perspective and supporting more ludic and social activities.

Publications are available, including information on the locales framework book that came out of my thesis work and a recent report for the Dept of Health on technologies to support self care.

I am involved in a number of professional activities including assoc editor of the CSCW journal, associate chair and reviewer for a number of CHI, CSCW, PDC and other conferences, running doctoral colloquia, giving keynote addresses eg at OzCHI2005. Other recent activities include an invited presentation to the Health forum of the European Forum Alpbach; presenting tutorials on older people and design, and ethnography and design at the Swiss Winter School of the 3eme cycle romand in Computer Science; and presenting at the BCS Sussex Branch on 'Designing new interactive systems for care at home'.
