Research Interests

I am interested in both computational and biological aspects of vision. In particular: vision for the control of action; visual motion and the pickup and interpretation of optic flow; the representation of images in low-level biological and computer vision; applications of computer vision, for example, to road traffic monitoring; applications of neural networks in low-level vision; the integration of different types of visual information; Bayesian reasoning.

Introduction to Programming Paradigms, for second year students in Physics and Astronomy.

I have previously taught a wide variety of courses, including Formal Computational Skills and Programming Techniques to students taking the MSc and MRes programmes, and the first year course Approaches to Cognitive Science.

I have supervised many final year AI and CS projects, and some MSc projects.

I am a member of the Higher Education Academy. Colleagues are welcome to look at my successful application for membership (available within Sussex and from certain other University sites only).

Academic Administration

From 2004 to 2008 I was Director of Student Support in the School of Science and Technology, responsible for the strategic development of student support mechanisms within the School.

I have been a member of the University's appeals board, and I was on the board of the Managed Learning Environment (Sussex Direct).

I was Sub-Dean of The School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences (COGS) 1996-1999 and 2002-2003, responsible for student welfare and progress, and academic administration.

I was COGS's electronic information officer, and supervised a far-reaching revision of its web site.
