THE UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX
CG019
BA & LLB FIRST YEAR EXAMINATION 2000
COGNITIVE MODELLING
Monday 18 September 2000 9.30 am - 11.00 am
Candidates must attempt TWO questions
- Using the
simple feed-forward neural network program
for distinguishing words from non-words that you have studied
as an example:
- Describe the structure of the network.
- Explain with an example how the network computes output values,
given input values.
- Explain how the network can be taught.
- Briefly discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the program as a model
of human performance.
- Using the Production System for modelling subtraction
that you have studied as an example:
- Explain how the production system works.
- Explain the difference between Working Memory and Production Memory.
- Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of Production Systems
as tools for cognitive modelling.
- Using the Blocks World
language understanding program that you have studied as an
example:
- Explain with examples the stages the program goes through in
interpreting
a command for the simulated robot to carry out.
- Describe three sorts of barriers that may prevent the
system from understanding or executing a command.
- Briefly discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the program as a model
of human language understanding and performance.
