THE UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX CG019

BA & LLB FIRST YEAR EXAMINATION 2000

COGNITIVE MODELLING

Monday 18 September 2000 9.30 am - 11.00 am

---------------------------------------------------------

Candidates must attempt TWO questions
  1. Using the simple feed-forward neural network program for distinguishing words from non-words that you have studied as an example:
    1. Describe the structure of the network.
    2. Explain with an example how the network computes output values, given input values.
    3. Explain how the network can be taught.
    4. Briefly discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the program as a model of human performance.

  2. Using the Production System for modelling subtraction that you have studied as an example:
    1. Explain how the production system works.
    2. Explain the difference between Working Memory and Production Memory.
    3. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of Production Systems as tools for cognitive modelling.

  3. Using the Blocks World language understanding program that you have studied as an example:
    1. Explain with examples the stages the program goes through in interpreting a command for the simulated robot to carry out.
    2. Describe three sorts of barriers that may prevent the system from understanding or executing a command.
    3. Briefly discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the program as a model of human language understanding and performance.
