Full Time
Fixed term: Five year contract from (anticipated start date) 01 April 2010
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral position, funded by the European Research Council, to work on "Reductive Transformations of Carbon Oxides" under the supervision of Professor F.G.N.Cloke FRS and Dr. J.F.C.Turner. This project will involve the development of new methods for the activation and subsequent functionalisation of CO and CO2 using low-valent uranium and early transition metal organometallic complexes. The ultimate goals are the stoichiometric generation of more complex C1-derived organic molecules and the use of a combined electrochemical and chemical approach to develop a catalytic system. Previous experience in the synthesis and characterisation of air-sensitive early transition metal/f-element compounds, organic ligand synthesis, and an in-depth working knowledge of high field NMR are essential. A working knowledge of organometallic electrochemistry would be advantageous. The successful applicant will hold a PhD, or have submitted their PhD thesis prior to taking up the appointment.

Under the new Points Based System (PBS) the University may be able to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS). The decision on whether to issue a CoS would depend on the resident labour market test being met and the likelihood of the preferred candidate being able to attain the required points to qualify under the PBS.
