Salary range: £29,704 to £35,469 per annum, dependent on level of skill and ability
Full time, fixed term for 1 year
Expected start date: 1 February 2010 (flexible by agreement)
A 1-year postdoctoral position in Applied Mathematics is available within the Department of Mathematics at the University of Sussex. This position is funded by the EPSRC and the project has a January 2010 start date. The successful candidate will join the growing group of Mathematics Applied to Biology with considerable expertise ranging from Game Theory and Mathematical Epidemiology to Developmental Biology.
The goal of the project is to formulate and analyse a series of novel mathematical models that account for the concurrent spread of an infectious disease and the diffusion of information triggered by the presence of the disease. The project builds on a completed feasibility study, and aims to develop models that can accommodate more realistic contact networks and different types of information transmission. The project also involves measuring the level of overlap between disease and information transmission and evaluating the effect of overlap on the dynamic and outcome of epidemics.
Candidates should have a DPhil/PhD (or in advanced stage of writing up), or equivalent level of scholarly activity, and relevant experience in mathematical epidemiology or population dynamics, and be familiar with modeling and model analysis techniques in the context of these areas. Good programming skills are essential.
