Daniel Feakes

Daniel is a
Research Fellow with the Harvard Sussex Program at SPRU
- Science and Technology Policy Research where he has been since
September 2000. He previously spent three years working as the HSP
researcher at the Organization for
the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)
in The Hague. Daniel's research interests fall into three main areas:
1) European
Union action against chemical and biological weapons.
2) The role
of civil society in opposing chemical and biological warfare.
3) Treaty implementation
and enforcement.
Daniel is currently
working on three specific research projects. In the first, he is
studying the role
of civil society in preventing the use of chemical and biological
weapons under the UK Economic and Social Research Council's
Non-Governmental Public Action programme. In the second,
he is collaborating with Caitríona McLeish and Julian Perry Robinson
to study the impact of non-traditional actors (i.e. civil society,
international organizations, industry etc) on the
globalization of dual-use CBW technologies. This is a two-year
project under the ESRC's New Security Challenges programme.
Thirdly, Daniel is working on a project with Ian Kenyon and Julian
Perry Robinson to write a case study on the creation
of the OPCW.
In addition
to his research work, Daniel co-organized the ESRC
research seminar series on "New Approaches to WMD Proliferation",
during 2005-2007. He is convenor of the HSP 'Sussex
Days' seminars, and vice-chair of the Geneva-based BioWeapons
Prevention Project. Daniel graduated from the University of
Sussex in 1996 with an MA in Contemporary European Studies and a
BA in History with German.
