The Bio Medical Modelling Unit of the University of Sussex is one of the few centres in the world that have the facilities for processing medical images both for the development of physical medical models and the generation of advanced three dimensional computer models.

The Bio Medical Modelling Unit is not only engaged in fundamental research in many areas related to Bio Medical modelling but also provides a commercial service to clinicians to aid in pre-operative planning as well as clinical research. Close collaboration with the Rapid Prototyping Group and the Medical Research Centre of at Sussex University ensures that the Unit can provide a comprehensive service in all areas associated with modelling using state-of-the-art technology.

The Bio Medical Modelling Unit, apart from providing model development services for various medical and research applications, is interested in co-operating with other institutions to bring together ideas and knowledge from various clinical areas and to explore the possibilities of introducing new ways of visualising and using medical imaging data.

Unit Aims:

  • To apply Bio Medical modelling technology in a wide variety of applications within the medical and research environment.

  • To develop collaboration with different hospital and research establishments and to propose a variety of relevant Bio Medical modelling projects.

  • To investigate technologies that provide model-based medical devices, such as implants and surgical templates, which need to be integrated into new clinical and manufacturing procedures.

  • To promote Bio Medical modelling technology by means of organised presentations, case studies, workshops, an Internet site, journal papers and articles.
