A large and rising share of the world's poor live in Sub-Saharan Africa, most of whom live in rural areas. This African Development Bank funded paper provides policy guidance on how to help minimise adverse consequences of globalisation, focusing on one of the most important aspects, the liberalisation of international trade.
Whilst important physical, structural and social barriers (particularly in remote areas) must be overcome if rural producers are to participate actively in national and international markets, their ability to produce much above subsistence is often severely curtailed by technological backwardness. The paper also examines these issues in light of the challenges imposed by conflict and HIV/AIDS, two of the greatest challenges to African development.
